Viking Ocean Cruises

Daily Itinerary

1. Day 1

   Toronto, Canada

   Canada

Toronto is Canada's most multicultural metropolis, where over 200 languages, the ROM's Libeskind crystal, Frank Gehry's AGO redesign, and neighborhoods spanning every cuisine on Earth create one of North America's most rewarding and underestimated cities. Visit September via Viking for the Toronto International Film Festival, waterfront island escapes, and the revelation that Canada's financial capital harbors cultural diversity rivaling any city on the continent.

2. Day 2

3. Day 3

   St. Lawrence Seaway Locks

4. Day 4

   Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada

   Canada

Trois-Rivieres is one of North America's oldest cities, founded in 1634 on the St. Lawrence River as a fur trade outpost of New France, now a culturally vibrant Quebec city of colonial heritage and boreal wilderness. Must-dos include the Vieux-Trois-Rivieres historic district, canoeing in Parc National de la Mauricie, and tasting authentic Quebecois tourtiere and poutine. Visit September through mid-October for the spectacular Quebec autumn foliage.

5. Day 5

   Quebec City

   Canada

Quebec City is North America's only walled city, a UNESCO treasure where 400 years of French colonial architecture crown a St. Lawrence promontory beneath the iconic Château Frontenac. Visit September through October via Cunard or Seabourn for autumn foliage transforming stone ramparts, elevated Québécois terroir cuisine, and the singular experience of genuine Old World atmosphere on a continent that rarely provides it.

6. Day 6

   Tadoussac, Quebec, Canada

   Canada

Tadoussac is a historic village at the mouth of Canada's Saguenay Fjord, where cold river waters meeting the St. Lawrence create one of the world's premier whale-watching destinations with up to 13 species including belugas, fin whales, and occasional blue whales. Must-dos include a Zodiac whale-watching excursion, kayaking the dramatic Saguenay Fjord, and visiting North America's oldest wooden church. Visit August or September for peak whale diversity and autumn foliage.

7. Day 7

   Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Canada

   Saint Pierre and Miquelon

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is France's last territory in North America, a fog-wrapped archipelago off Newfoundland where croissants, crêpes, and the euro coexist with cod fishing and Prohibition-era history. Must-dos include exploring the rum-running Heritage Museum, dining on fresh cod and French wines, and visiting the haunting cemetery on Île aux Marins. June through September offers the best weather for this improbable outpost of French culture.

8. Day 8

   Gros Morne National Park

   Canada

Gros Morne National Park on Newfoundland's west coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for the Tablelands—exposed Earth mantle rock—and Western Brook Pond, a landlocked fjord with 600-meter cliffs. Must-dos include hiking to the Gros Morne summit, boating through Western Brook Pond, and walking the Tablelands geological trail. July and August offer the warmest weather, while September brings fall colors and berry season.

9. Day 9

   Red Bay

   Canada

Red Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Labrador's coast where sixteenth-century Basque whalers operated the world's largest whaling industry, leaving remarkably preserved shipwrecks and onshore tryworks. Must-dos include visiting the National Historic Site museum, taking a boat to Saddle Island's tryworks ruins, and watching for whales and icebergs in the Strait of Belle Isle. Visit July to August for the warmest weather and best wildlife sightings.

10. Day 10

    Battle Harbour

    Canada

Battle Harbour is a meticulously restored nineteenth-century fishing station on a remote island off Labrador's coast, once the unofficial capital of the Labrador fishery. Must-dos include touring the heritage buildings, dining on traditional salt cod and cloudberry dishes, and watching icebergs drift past the settlement. Visit July through September, the only window when the site is accessible and open.

11. Day 11

    Labrador Sea sailing

12. Day 12

    Ivittuut, Greenland

    Greenland

Ivittuut is a near-abandoned settlement on Greenland's southwest coast, once the world's sole source of cryolite — a mineral critical to aluminium production that made this remote outpost strategically vital during two world wars. Must-dos include exploring the haunting mine ruins, looking for Norse farmstead remains along the Arsuk Fjord, and watching for humpback whales feeding in the fjord waters. Visit July through September for navigable waters and the mildest sub-Arctic conditions.

13. Day 13

    Nuuk Godthaab

    Greenland

Nuuk, Greenland's diminutive capital, is a city of vivid contrasts — colourful colonial houses against Arctic granite, Inuit heritage alongside contemporary Nordic culture, and world-class museums steps from untamed fjords. Visitors should not miss the Greenland National Museum's Qilakitsoq mummies and a Zodiac excursion into the surrounding iceberg-studded fjord system. The prime cruising season runs from June through September, when extended daylight illuminates the landscape in an ethereal sub-Arctic glow and waters remain navigable for expedition vessels.

14. Day 14

    Kapisillit, Greenland

    Greenland

Kapisillit is a tiny Inuit settlement of 60 people at the head of Greenland's Nuuk Fjord, where tidewater glaciers calve into turquoise waters and traditional Arctic char fishing sustains a community that has lived here for millennia. Must-dos include the boat journey through the iceberg-filled fjord, watching Arctic char being smoked on shoreline racks, and hiking tundra trails with views of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Visit August for the warmest weather and the char fishing season.

15. Day 15
