The best time to visit is during the spring or early fall, when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are fewer.

9. Day 9

   Brindisi

   Italy

Brindisi is an ancient Adriatic port city in Puglia, southern Italy, where the storied Via Appia once met the sea — a place of Templar churches, Swabian fortresses, and some of the finest seafood in the Mediterranean. Visitors should not miss tasting raw sea urchin at the harbor and exploring the baroque grandeur of nearby Lecce or the white city of Ostuni. The mild southern Italian climate makes spring through early autumn ideal, with September and October offering warm seas, golden light, and fewer crowds along the Puglian coast.

10. Day 10

    Sarande

    Albania

Sarandë is Albania's Ionian coast jewel, where the UNESCO-listed Butrint archaeological marvel and the impossibly turquoise Blue Eye spring create a Mediterranean experience rivaling Greece at a fraction of the cost. Visit June via Emerald Yacht Cruises or Virgin Voyages for six-civilization archaeological sites and Albania's exciting Mediterranean frontier.

11. Day 10

    Corfu

    Greece

Where Homer placed the island of the Phaeacians and four centuries of Venetian rule left their most enduring Mediterranean legacy, Corfu is a singular island of extraordinary historical depth and natural beauty. The UNESCO-listed Old Town — its narrow Kantounia alleyways, the elegant Liston arcade, and twin Venetian fortresses — is the finest preserved Venetian streetscape in Greece. Beyond the town, secret coves, olive groves of immense antiquity, and mountain villages offer weeks of unhurried discovery. May through June and September offer perfect conditions: warm sea temperatures, clear skies, and the island before or after its summer crescendo.

12. Day 11

May through June and September offer perfect conditions: warm sea temperatures, clear skies, and the island before or after its summer crescendo.

13. Day 13

    Taormina

    Italy

Taormina is a cliffside Sicilian jewel 200 meters above the Ionian Sea, featuring an ancient Greek theater with Mount Etna as its backdrop, the exquisite Isola Bella bay, and some of Sicily's finest cuisine. Must-dos include a performance at the Teatro Antico, the cable car to Isola Bella, and tasting Etna volcanic wines. April through June and September through October offer ideal temperatures.

14. Day 14

    Amalfi

    Italy

Amalfi is the former maritime republic that gave its name to Italy's most celebrated coastline, where the Arab-Norman cathedral, medieval paper mills, and whitewashed buildings cascading to the Tyrrhenian Sea create the definitive image of Italian coastal beauty. Visit April through June via Windstar or Azamara for the Cloister of Paradise and the coastline that has been the world's standard for scenic perfection.

15. Day 15

    Capri

    Italy

Capri is a legendary limestone island rising from the Bay of Naples, celebrated since Roman antiquity for its dramatic cliffs, the ethereal Blue Grotto, and an atmosphere of effortless Mediterranean elegance. Visitors should not miss the Grotta Azzurra's cobalt light show and the sunset view of the Faraglioni from the Piazzetta's café tables. The island is magnificent year-round, though late April through June offers ideal conditions — warm days without peak-summer crowds, wildflowers blanketing the cliff paths, and crystalline waters already inviting enough for a swim off the rocks at Marina Piccola.

16. Day 16

    Porto Ercole, Italy

    Italy

Porto Ercole is a fortified fishing village on Tuscany's Monte Argentario peninsula, where Caravaggio spent his final days and Italian elegance meets authentic maritime life beneath a Spanish fortress. Must-dos include harbor-side dining on cacciucco fish stew, exploring the old town's stepped lanes, and excursions to the Maremma coast. May through October offers warm Mediterranean conditions, with June and September ideal.

17. Day 17

    Civitavecchia, Rome

    Italy

Rome's ancient maritime gateway since the Emperor Trajan commissioned its harbour in 106 AD, Civitavecchia is the natural prologue to the Eternal City — just seventy minutes southeast by express rail. The port's Renaissance fortress, designed in part by Michelangelo, anchors a working waterfront that has welcomed travellers for millennia. Beyond Rome's unmissable monuments, consider an afternoon in the Civitavecchia thermal baths, drawing on mineral waters prized since antiquity. Spring and autumn offer the ideal balance of mild weather and manageable crowds for exploring the capital's layered history.

18. Day 18

    Bonifacio

    France

Bonifacio is a dramatically cliff-perched medieval citadel at Corsica's southern tip, where Genoese ramparts tower above a fjord-like natural harbour in the turquoise Strait of Bonifacio. Visitors should descend the vertiginous Escalier du Roi d'Aragon carved into the limestone cliffs and take a boat excursion to the pristine Lavezzi archipelago nature reserve for world-class snorkelling among sculpted granite formations. The ideal window is June or September, when the Mediterranean light is at its most luminous and the narrow streets of the haute ville remain blissfully uncrowded.

19. Day 19

    Porto Cervo

    Italy

Porto Cervo is the jewel of Sardinia's Costa Smeralda, a purpose-built luxury village where world-class sailing, pristine emerald beaches, and ancient Nuragic archaeology coexist against a backdrop of sculpted granite coastline. Visit from May through October, with June and September offering the ideal balance of Mediterranean warmth and refined exclusivity.

20. Day 20

    Sorrento

    Italy

Sorrento is a clifftop jewel on southern Italy's Sorrentine Peninsula, perched sixty meters above the Bay of Naples with sweeping views of Vesuvius and Capri. Visitors should not miss the gnocchi alla sorrentina at a family-run trattoria in the old quarter, nor the short excursion along the Amalfi Coast to Positano and Ravello. The ideal season stretches from late April through mid-October, when warm Mediterranean light illuminates the tufa cliffs and the famed local lemons reach their most fragrant peak.

21. Day 21

    Siracuse, Sicily

    Italy

22. Day 22

    Valletta

    Malta

Valletta, Europe's smallest capital, is a fortress city of exceptional grandeur raised from bare limestone in just fifteen years after the Knights of St. John repelled the great Ottoman siege of 1565 — its rigid Renaissance grid of sun-drenched streets concealing a density of baroque palaces, gilded oratories, and subterranean World War II shelters unrivaled anywhere in the Mediterranean. The Grand Harbour, framed by golden bastions plunging into startlingly blue water, offers one of the most dramatically photogenic arrivals in the world for arriving vessels. Spring and autumn deliver the most comfortable temperatures for exploring this UNESCO-listed gem.

23. Day 24

    Crete

    Greece

Crete is Greece's largest island and the cradle of Minoan civilisation, offering the Palace of Knossos, dramatic gorge hikes, world-class beaches, and one of the Mediterranean's most celebrated cuisines. Must-dos include exploring Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, tasting wild-greens horta and aged graviera cheese, and swimming at Elafonisi's pink-sand beach. May through October offers the best weather, with spring wildflowers and autumn harvests providing seasonal highlights.

24. Day 26

    Alexandria

    Egypt

Alexandria is the ancient Mediterranean port where the Great Library, Euclid's geometry, and the Pharos lighthouse defined Western civilization, now home to the stunning Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the multicultural Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa. Visit October through April via Oceania Cruises or Royal Caribbean for twenty-three centuries of layered history, optional Cairo excursions, and the city whose intellectual legacy surpasses most nations.

25. Day 27

    Alexandria

26. Day 29

    Rhodes

    Greece

Rhodes, Greece's resplendent Dodecanese jewel, merges a UNESCO-listed Medieval Old Town built by the Knights of St. John with sun-soaked Aegean beauty just seven miles from the Turkish coast. Wander the Street of the Knights before tasting *pitaroudia* fritters and local Athiri wine at an Old Town taverna, then take a catamaran to the neoclassical harbor of Symi. The island basks in over 300 days of sunshine annually, with April through June and September through October offering ideal temperatures for exploration without the peak-summer crowds.

27. Day 30

    Mykonos

    Greece

Mykonos is the Aegean at its most seductive — a labyrinth of bougainvillea-draped whitewashed alleys designed to disorient pirates (and occasionally visitors) leading to Kástro, the medieval hilltop quarter overlooking Little Venice, where balconied houses hang directly above the sea. The island's famous windmills, perched on a ridge above the old harbour, are best photographed at golden hour as pelicans patrol the waterfront below. Visit the sacred archaeological island of Delos — a 30-minute boat crossing — for one of the most significant ancient sites in the Greek world. May, June, and September offer the perfect balance of warmth, light, and bearable crowds.

28. Day 31

    Piraeus

    Greece

The port that launched Athenian democracy's naval supremacy at the Battle of Salamis, Piraeus remains Greece's maritime heartbeat — and the most convenient gateway to both the Acropolis and the Aegean island chains. Dine on grilled sea bream at a Mikrolimano harbourside taverna, visit the extraordinary bronze Piraeus Apollo, and set sail for Hydra or Santorini by afternoon. Late April through June and September offer the Aegean at its most golden and uncrowded.
